Does it mean your dreams are over when you're struck with disaster?
Larry:
We all know terrible things can happen to people. Like the Bible says, the rain falls on the good and the bad. But there's also the general impression that if bad things happen to you, then you just can't overcome them. And winners win because they’ve lived a protected life and never had to experience these types of trials. Is that what you've seen, Bill?
Bill:
Oh, no, just the opposite. In reality, the winners have experienced more setbacks, and they chose to use those setbacks as setups to success—not failure. In every case, the person had to just keep going forward.
I think so many people want the easy way out. They think if they try something and it’s difficult, if at first you don't succeed, then maybe it's not for you. I hate to hear people say, "Find something you enjoy doing, and you'll never work a day in your life." Those people are morons! They follow the same path as, "Don't worry about how much money you make. Just do something you enjoy doing." I hate that kind of thinking.
The reality is successful people are more interested in the outcome than what they have to do to get there. They stub their toe a bunch. They screw up a bunch. Like I tell people, there are two things in life that are very similar: golf and marriage. I can't tell you how many times I wanted to quit my golf. I can't tell you how many times I've thought, "Why am I doing this to myself? I don't want to do this any more." But that's actually when you know you're making progress. When you want to quit… but you don't. You want to back off… but you don't. To me, that is the cornerstone of success.
