Unique Cultural Needs

from Tom Hopkins book "Selling for Dummies"

- Be patient when building trust and establishing relationships

- Speak more slowly than you normally do, but don't raise your voice because you think the other person can't understand you.

- Avoid slang, buzzwords, and jargon.

- Pay attention to non-verbal clues.

- Inquiring about the person's health is a positive gesture in middle eastern culture. Also, when the relationship becomes closer, don't be suprised if you are given a kiss on the cheek.

- Don't extend your hand to shake a middle eastern woman's hand unless she extends her's first.

- Having some business cards made with your contact information in the language of the recipient is a good idea. If your card is two sidded with your language on the other, always present your card with the client's language facing up.

- In any culture, taking the time to read the card of each person who gives you one before accepting another card is wise. Do not set the cards aside quickly, that would be like dismissing the person to move on to someone else.
